About the village Óbánya
About the village Óbánya Print E-mail

The small village with its only street lies between two hills, on the bank of a little brook, running along the vale. Óbánya has 177 habitants and is located between Bonyhád and  Pécs, on main road 6.
The habitants of the small settlement, which is to be found in the Kelet-Mecsek National Park, are mainly German-Hungarians. The locals use German-Hungarian as a daily language and have preserved the traditions of this minority.

The tiny village has been famous of its potters and their richly decorated, scratched pots since hundreds of years. The Pottery Exhibition commemorates the olden artisans.

Significant building in the village is the church. There are more tourist paths crossing the area, the surrounding hills are beloved by hikers; especially the beautiful small waterfalls of the valley, running from the ’Stein’ mills to the village of  Kisújbánya.

The most stunning sight of the valley are the ‘Weeping rocks’, which often serves as a meeting point for hikers. The area has a rich flora and fauna, is a habitat for several rare species.

You will be able to find a shop, pub, restaurant and a mini-golf course in the village.
